Illustration Friday-Leap

I'm so happy to make a fresh piece just for Illustration Friday. It is one of those free forming pieces that I worked straight on the computer, without thinking too much and see where it takes me. I 've been working on another piece that is looking similar to this. Perhaps this is my new personal style.

Speaking of style-What IS your style? Ever asked yourself that question and do you know how to answer it? In a recent interview, I was asked how I described my style. It is one of those funny little questions- because I draw the way I draw...never thought about what style it is. So I think of my work as cute, quirky, funny and modern. I also hear alot of people describe my work as retro. Never thought of it that way, but I do get alot of inspiration from retro graphics. Well, how about that!

Love your work. Leaping bird!
As an entry level illustrator I am always wondering about the subject regarding "style". Thank you for great answer about it too!

Love it! Kind of reminiscent of Tim Biskup's style even.

I see retro, but then that's one of those things that you can't quite explain, but you know it when you see. What I like is that even if you use the computer, it all looks hand-drawn which is nice. The first thing I though when I saw it was, that big guy's head looks like a pickle! Not that that's bad, but it made me stop and think.

another fantastic illustration Jannie!! I love his long fun legs! I have to buy a wacom this week if it kills me.

I laughed about your other question because I work in surface/product design I have many different styles and some of my clients cannot believe that half of the stuff is me. I have a watercolor, graphic, airbrush and loose look and now I am back to doing collage work too. So my style is what ever suits me at the moment of creativity!!

I wonder if -as illustrators- we really need to develop a style. I think that maybe it's not always a good idea to have just one style, but several ways for approaching to work... what do you think?

I love your style, though. Even if I try to generate different graphic languages, your illustrations are so wonderful that I have not enough of them :)

Great point made with "style"...I don't think I have a style. All my stuff looks different I think! All I know is that your STYLE is an inspiration! I want to copy all your work and practice so that I can be just like you! :) Your use of color is fantastic also! (BTW, this has NOTHING to do with this illo, but my Kindergartners drew their favorite part of the book Penguins' Perfect Picnic, and I wanted to mail them to you! I chose only a few so as not to overwhelm you! If you're interested, please send me an e-mail...if you still have my address :) THANKS!) TRACY

I love the unusual elements like pink sky and red water. Your birds are always fun! This has a lot of action going on...and I like that each birdie has a safety umbrella :)

Great illo!

Your style is AMAZING!!!! For me the style is about the concept that generat the idea and all the condiments that surround it. The technique is not more important than what you have to say...
I hope you will understand my idea despite my poor english.

Any way, great work!!

This is so fun! I love the colours, and all the playful shapes.

Your work is definitely cute, quirky, funny and modern. I think the “retro” description is just an easier way for people to say they get a warm fuzzy feeling whenever they see your work.

Yay, Jannie!!! You continue to bring me a world of joy with your awesomositude! That's your word now. I just made it up for you.

This is really great. Love the colors and how you handled the rain and the clouds. Thanks to Mike, next time someone asks what your style is just say it's full of "awesomositude"

Looks like this bird is in a hurry . . . is he off to visit the hen of his dreams or is he late for an appointment? Don't let that rain stop you, man, leap out there and grab life with both wings!

Another perfect post, Jannie. You rock!

Wonderful! He reminds me of a dill pickle.

This chicken looks quite dapper. I think my favorite aspect of the piece is the placement of the chicken's mustache. I mean, I've never had occasion to even think about where a chicken's mustache would be, if a chicken had a mustache. But now I know. :-) Great illustration!

Another neat-o piece Janee! This has such a quirky palette, and its a fun concept.

Great piece Jannie! I think describing a style is like describing music - once you put a word to it, you categorize it, so it's really hard - all that matters is that it is YOU and that is a wonderful thing! Keep doing what you do!! :-)
