Winter

We've been a little quiet over at Illustration for Kids but we have another promo in the works with a winter theme.

I have some fun books coming out with a UK publisher I'm excited about and will announce them soon. In the meanwhile, stay warm everyone.

4 x 4 Stickers

Stickers!!! My first professionally printed promo stickers. Build-a-Sign kindly offered to print some stickers for me, they are technically bumper stickers but they are a great size at 4" x 4". With the MoCCA Art Fest coming up, I am hoping to give some away to my customers (wink wink), stick them on bags, and I also ended up sticking one on my moleskine sketchbook:

The stickers have a nice gloss coating to them yet thin and durable. I'm going to have alot of great uses for these. Yay!

Have you send out your Valentines yet?

I've been a bit obsessed with the ABCs lately. After such great feedback and response from the Animal ABCs and Christmas ABCs, I took on the challenge to do Valentine's day. With a little help from my husband ("Q" and "Z" was quite tricky), it was fun coming up with this and using a distinctive vintage color palette, thanks again to colourlovers.com.

Christmas postcard

Just sent this off to the printers! This will be my Christmas postcard. I've been thinking about what I wanted to do for this year. Since I got so many nice comments about the animal ABCs, I wonder if I can continue it onto other themes.

There are some tricky letters but thats the fun part, figure it out. Even though I felt like I'm cheating a little with the letter Z being "zzzz," I'm pretty happy with the end result.

I'm already thinking about other themes already :-)

Printed Things

Got my latest copy of Picturebook 10 recently.
Here is my piece. I've been in Picturebook for several years now. And since it takes about a year for this book to to produce, I've always looked back at my work with a critical eye. But I actually *still* like this piece alot.
My "new-ish" business cards came in too. Overnight prints did a great job, my only wish was that I had my name and info a little bit bigger. There is always next time.

Thats it for now!

Promos and Art Styles

Promos
I'm very honored to be contributing again over at Zero2illo, with this week's focus on promotional materials. Here is a link to the post where I talk about two of my own promo pieces along with some tips and advice. Thanks to Jonathan Woodward, the creator behind Zero2illo, who is also a talented illustrator!

Art Styles
Speaking of which, Jonathan and I are part of 18 artists who share their opinions on artistic styles over at VectorTuts+. It is also part of a digital illustration "session" currently over at Tuts+, with plenty of inspirational posts. I'll be following along. Thanks to Chris Leavens for the interview and its a great article with a diverse bunch of artists. If you love vector art, you'll have to check out Chris' work; along with this fabulous link on how he does it all.

1-Sided business card

I was in need to restock my business cards when I found a great deal at overnight prints (sign up for their email list, they are great about having sales). I decided to quickly convert an old 2-sided design I had for last year's Surtex show and make it into a more general business card.

I put it up on twitter and unexpectedly got great response, so I thought I would put it up here as well. Stay tuned for more promo-related posts here very soon.

Spring Promo at Illustration for Kids

Enjoying the spring weather as I work on my own book dummy and a piece for our spring promo over at Illustration for Kids:
And a thank you to Lori West at Curledupbooks.com for nice review of The Great Matzoh Hunt.

Thats about it around here. I've been taking a slight break from Facebook and Twitter, and giving myself more time for personal projects. Also I need to start doing some research on my upcoming trip to Tokyo. I can't wait!

Moving Monster-Revised

I decided to redo my moving monster piece, you can find the first attempt here. Thanks to all the feedback here and over on flickr, I was able to see what was missing. Here's what I came up with now:

Here was the "before":
Now that I look at it, The "before" looks more like a sketch. I'm glad I was willing to push it a little further, thanks to all the encouragement. I feel alot better. Whew! :-)

Moving Postcard-Another Idea

I ended up going with another idea for my moving postcard. This is what I came up with (and printed). But after a few days of thinking about my previous idea though, I want to give the "moving monster" another shot. I received some great feedback to make it better. But since I really should be getting a promo out, this will be mailed out.
Alot of promotion and marketing plans are floating in my mind lately. Personal projects are brewing too. Perhaps my muse did move with me to Ann Arbor...she was just on another flight! :-)

Moving Postcard-1st Attempt

Trying to get back in the swing of things with an attempt to come up with a moving announcement postcard. I'm finding that I'm struggling a little bit, did I leave my muse behind? This is my first attempt- fun to post here but I don't like it enough to use as a postcard. Back to the drawing board.

Fun things I'm enjoying:
*Fellow illustrator Gina Perry with a pic of her baby Miles reading The Haunted Ghoul Bus! Totally adorable facial expression while flipping through the book! Its priceless to me, thanks, Gina!

*Recently found this awesome blog about children's book design and illustration:
The Apple and the Egg

Cluck cluck!

Spring

This is my piece for our spring mailer at Illustration for Kids. I had a meeting with an art director once who told me that the problem with alot of vector illustrations isn't because its digital, but because it is usually very flat in terms of perspective. This is my attempt to take on that challenge and shake things up a bit.

The Licensing promos are here!

Its driving me nuts that my camera doesn't take very good pictures. But I had to post these because I'm very excited about them. I just got these postcards from the printers to promote my art for licensing.
I had a wonderful meeting last week with my Surtex partners about setting up our booth. Right now we are trying to figure out where are the best places to print vinyl banners. It will be my first time printing up something as large as 3' x 7'...if anyone has tips on that, I would appreciate it. But I guess right now, I need to figure out exactly what art I will put on there!

A while back I won a giveaway over at Vectips, and the prize was 1000 free business card printing from Uprinting.com. With these crazy economic times, we can all use some free promo materials.

If you don't remember, I ended up printing these wacky coupon/business cards, which I will be using at the Surtex show:

So, alright, on to the good stuff!

How to Enter

A little Incentive in this Econcomy

Originally I did this coupon image for Illustration Friday's topic "Save." Many people encouraged me to actually make this and send it out. So when I won a giveaway over at Vectips.com-1000 business cards from uprinting.com, I couldn't resist and went for it! They did a great job and do custom sizing, so these are a little wider than your usual business card. Plus, I got full color on both sides!

Special shout out to Ryan over at Vectips for picking me! (please go check out the site, especially my fellow Adobe Illustrator lovers! Great tips on all things vector!)

And thank you for everyone's comments about my Halloween stickers! Its been a bit busy here, and I am also going to FRANCE next week! Woohoo! Just trying to get everything in order before I leave...so until then...cluck cluck!

Makin' Envelopes

Some experimenting with the reprints I talked about in an earlier post. It was perfect to fold them into envelopes. A little glue on the side and a white label on the front.
Stuffed with my postcards, it was more sturdy.
I sent one to Tom (who sparked this idea) and he gave me some feedback on how the envelope held up through the postal system. A little bit worn on the corners but otherwise it was OK. A fun little experiment indeed!

Picture Book Directory

Last week, I got my copy of Picture Book 2008, (a directory of children's illustrators.) Here's my link on their website.
Along with it were reprints of my page, so much so that I don't know what to do with it! My mistake is that I used this image as a mailer last year. Any fun ideas as to what to do with them? Maybe line my entire apartment wall?

Here is our mailer (front):
And here is the back:
